“Portrait of the Painter Anton Peschka” (1909) by Egon Schiele showcases Schiele’s early style, heavily influenced by Gustav Klimt. In this piece, Anton Peschka is depicted.

Anton Peschka (1885-1940) was a friend of Egon Schiele who studied with him and was part of the Neukunstgruppe, a group of young artists who disagreed with the traditional methods taught at the Academy. Schiele painted Anton Peschka in 1909. Later, Peschka would become his brother-in-law by marrying Schiele’s sister Gertrude or rtie. At the time, Schiele’s work showed Klimt’s touch, especially in the decorative elements and color use. However, Schiele’s unique style was beginning to emerge. You can see early signs of the raw, expressive approach he would become known for. This painting is a fascinating mix of Klimt’s influence and Schiele’s developing individuality, marking an important step in his artistic journey. Within a year, Schiele’s style would change radically. When he painted Anton Peschka again, Schiele was developing his raw expressionistic style.
