This painting, originally titled L’ombrella japonesa (The Japanese Umbrella), depicts three women beneath a parasol on a beach. The parasol, which belonged to Masriera’s family, was imported from Japan. Considered one of Masriera’s finest works, it was exhibited in Madrid in 1920, as well as in Japan and London.

Lluís Masriera i Rosés (1872–1958) was primarily known as an enameller and goldsmith, though he also pursued painting. He frequently traveled to Paris and its salons, where he was introduced to Art Nouveau and the work of René Lalique. Masriera created numerous pieces in the Art Nouveau style—known as modernismo in Spain—and continued producing these jewel-like creations until 1913, when he shifted his artistic direction.

Masriera’s paintings are less widely known, which is why I wanted to share one of his works with you. His influence extended beyond jewelry, drawing inspiration from the Nabis and other contemporary movements. He maintained close connections with prominent artists of his time, including his father, Josep Masriera, and his brother, Francesc Masriera—both respected silversmiths and painters. His time in Geneva, studying under the renowned enameller Edward Lossier, further shaped his artistic development.

Masriera played a key role in shaping Catalan Art Nouveau, and his work still resonates with those who appreciate the elegance and innovation of that era.

J’aime les jeux de lumière, le paravent extraordinaire, l’ambiance intimiste👌

I am familiar with his jewelry designs. He is one of my favorite Art Nouveau designers, after Lalique, and Fouquet. I had no idea he was also a painter. Thank you for introducing that to me.

You are welcome. In time to come I will expand a lot more on Catalan modernism. But this site is still young! ;-)
