Vienna Secession: Wilhelm List

A young model sits on a settee upholstered in fabric designed by Martha Alber, a designer affiliated with the Wiener Werkstätte—or Vienna Workshops—a collective with which Wilhelm List frequently collaborated. Several art historians suggest that this model may be Wally Neuzil, the favored muse and longtime lover of Egon Schiele.

Wilhelm List (1864–1918) initially studied philosophy at the University of Vienna. From 1885 to 1889, he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Christian Griepenkerl, a prominent painter of the era. He later moved to Munich and subsequently studied under William-Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris. Beginning in 1893, List regularly exhibited his work in Vienna.

In 1897, List co-founded the Vienna Secession, an art movement that aimed to break away from the traditional styles endorsed by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He exhibited frequently with the Secession and played a vital role in its development. From 1900 to 1901, he served as editor of the magazine Ver Sacrum and was one of twelve illustrators featured in the 1902 Vienna Secession catalog, which was dedicated to Beethoven.

In 1905, List—alongside other leading artists such as Gustav Klimt—left the Secession due to disagreements over the movement’s direction. His paintings share stylistic affinities with Klimt’s, particularly in their use of color and ornamental detail. List’s work encompassed portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes, often infused with magical or mythological themes. His graphic art, especially his woodcuts and lithographs, is also highly esteemed. The Secessionists, including List, maintained close artistic ties and influenced one another’s work. While Gustav Klimt remains the most widely recognized member, the contributions of artists like Wilhelm List are equally significant and deserving of attention.
