Leo Gestel was a Dutch painter born on November 11, 1881, in Woerden, Netherlands. Coming from an artistic family, he received his first art lessons from his father, Willem Gestel, who was also an artist and the director of an art school.

Gestel was known for experimenting with various modern art styles, including Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, and Post-Impressionism. He was a leading figure in Dutch modernism, alongside artists like Piet Mondrian and Jan Sluyters.

Throughout his career, Gestel was influenced by the avant-garde movements he encountered during his visits to Paris. He often spent his summers in Bergen, a village in North Holland known for its artist colony, where he developed much of his work. In 1929, a fire destroyed his studio and many of his works, but he continued to create art until his death on November 26, 1941, in Hilversum, Netherlands. Gestel’s work is celebrated for its vibrant use of color and innovative techniques, making him a significant figure in the development of modern art in the Netherlands.
