In 1917, Schiele made a few drawings of the actress Marga Boerner at the request of an army officer, Hans Rosé. According to Jane Kallir, the coloring was added later in half an hour. Schiele made three drawings, and remarkably, two of them (not this one) were signed by both Schiele and Boerner, as if to authorize them. It is thought that they might have been intended for a painting that was never realized.
